Hawley ISD will be closed Friday, Feb. 4th
Hawley ISD will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, February 3rd.
I hate making calls about bad weather. It's so unpredictable. And I REALLY hate it when the weather comes in during the day after kids are already at school. I have been in a weather briefing with the weather service. Our precipitation is expected to start around 10:00 AM. We will be below freezing by 2:00 PM. Some of our bus routes do not finish up until after 5:00. To make sure that everyone is able to make it home safely, we will have a 12:30 release tomorrow. I will keep you updated on Thursday and Friday, but based on the briefing, it does not look good.
I do not anticipate significant accumulation of winter precipitation tonight, but I never underestimate Mosther Nature! Our goal is for all staff and students to remain safe. The HISD bad weather procedures will be as follows:
The Superintendent and Transportation Director will make the determination of road safety by 6:00AM.
Campus administrators will send out remind text to staff and parents. The Superintendent will post a notification on the school App.
Administrators will also post on social media.
The Superintendent will contact KTXS, KTAB, and KRBC.
Every school in Texas undergoes State monitoring of their Special Education program. Hawley ISD is currently in the process of monitoring during the spring of 2022. As part of the monitoring process, TEA requests that all parents who have a child that is served in the special education program complete the survey at the link below. Please take a few minutes to complete it.

With schools around the area closing, I want to address what goes into making those decisions. Each school has their own circumstances and has to make decisions for their own students. When I look at these situations, I look at several factors. I look at trends in attendance, clusters of absences among families, grades, campuses, etc. I also look at the number of new cases vs. students staying home because of quarantine or continued illness. One of the main factors is having enough healthy staff available to safely cover classes. We can combine classes together in some instances, but we don’t want to expose students unnecessarily to students they aren’t normally around. I also consider the community activities that will still be happening even if we cancelled school, such as stock shows and youth sports. If the point is to separate kids, community events are a factor. One of the main reasons that schools close is to deep clean. We have been using a sanitizing mister in classrooms after students leave. We continue to ask teachers to use Clorox wipes and sanitizer in classrooms and monitor kids washing hands. Friday is a student holiday and our custodial staff will be deep cleaning facilities. We are also adding some additional staff members to help with that deep cleaning. If the two-week “flatten the curve” experiment of 2020 taught us anything, I think we can all agree that this is unpredictable. We could close this week, and absences be worse next week. I strongly feel like that if we partner with parents to monitor kids for symptoms and keep sick kids home, clean as best we can, we should keep school open for kids who are not sick. Businesses are struggling with illnesses also. Parents having to stay home with healthy kids because school is closed would just add to a difficult situation. We continue to do the best we can and will continue to daily monitor the situation and keep everyone updated if anything changes. We currently have 36 active student COVID cases, 7 active staff COVID cases. Most of our absences are other illnesses.
There will not be any JV games tonight. The Varsity Girls will start at 5:30 followed by the Varsity Boys right after. The games are in Cisco.

Parents... We are seeing an increase in the number of kids with COVID and other respiratory illnesses. If your child needs a COVID test, you can pull to the back of the administration building between 7:45-3:45 on school days and text @c19test to 81010. Stay in your vehicle and someone will come out to test your child. You no longer need to register online.
I should clarify! Not as dramatic as it sounds…just front of a small car wedged under the side of a BIG bus. I don’t think it even scratches the bus. They just can’t get it out.
I am very excited to announce that Hawley ISD has just received word that we have been awarded a $487,500 grant for an Afterschool Program for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. We will be able to offer not only academic support but enrichment programs for students at all three campuses! I am very excited about the possibilities!
